Life of Charlotte Bronte; Volume 2 Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell 9781374924598 Books Reviews
Interesting account of the life of Charlotte Bronte. Some good insights. Elizabeth Gaskell was very brave to attempt this biography
Although Mrs. Gaskell's biography of Charlotte Bronte is not comprehensive, it is compassionate and rich. Much of the narrative is taken from letters written by Charlotte herself. As a devoted fan of both of these remarkable nineteenth century authors I enjoyed reading it.
No complaints ! Excellent seller and great shipping.
This biography offers both an"insider's peek" and greatly frustrating obfuscation to one who wishes a full view of Charlotte Bronte's life. Due to the author's obligation to protect the privacy of those friends still living at the time of publication, she could only refer obliquely to some of the more meaningful events of C.B.'s life.
I believe in reading the classics, and this is on Bloom's western canon list. Some parts were quite interesting, but this book has the usual Victorian tendency of over-emphasis on landscaping and verbose passages.
Mrs. Gaskell, as Elizabeth Gaskell was known in her time, is an excellent biographer of Charlotte Bronte. The two novelists were close personal friends, and Mrs. Gaskell was familiar with the many tragedies of Charlotte Bronte's life, starting in early childhood and continuing until her marriage - less than a year before she died of complications related to pregnancy. Mrs. Gaskell cautiously steps back from the mistake of analyzing Charlotte Bronte's novels herself; rather, she reports both the critics' reactions to each novel and then the author's reaction to the critics. I have read both volumes of this biography several times, and I learn more each time I reread them. A must-read for any fan of Charlotte Bronte.
From what I have read, Mrs. Gaskell was not that very close to Charlotte Bronte, and how many 'letters' did she actually receive, to base a book on.
I am a fan of Bronte books, especially Jane Eyre. I did not feel that Mrs. Gaskell portrayed Charlotte as well as she should have. There is a new sequel to Jane Eyre..Jane Eyre at Cranbridge that portrays the original Bronte characters much as in the original book. Plus there are many new characters in the new sequel, that make it quite an enjoyable read.Jane Eyre at Cranbridge A Jane Eyre Sequel
